It is the last-minute good-bye party for you, the class of 2020, and we are in the Chipman Room. As I am listening to Prof. Grossman's inspiring speech while looking at your emotional faces, I am thinking of one word: Eyjafjallajökull...This Icelandic volcano erupted and halted effectively the entire air travel in Europe for six-day in April 2010. Why do I remember it? Because those six days included the date of my Ph.D. defense, which meant that no one from my family could come to the Netherlands to see me defend my five years effort. I remember thinking that I was the unluckiest student ever. Looking back at this event 10 years later though, I see that it inexplicably strengthened my bond with my family and friends (and gave me quite a story to tell). You have an easier word to remember in 10 years (COVID-19) and one that had a much bigger impact than my Eyjafjallajökull. However, seeing how strong and bonded you were in Chipman that day, makes me absolutely sure that you will also find yourself looking back at these strange and depressing days, with inexplicable (but large) smiles on your faces. Until then, stay strong :)
